AUS vs PAK: Nathan Lyon most important cog in Australian bowling line-up, says Pat Cummins

Australia captain Pat Cummins has called Nathan Lyon as the most important cog in the bowling line-up. Speaking to the press after the first Test match, Cummins said that it is no secret that Lyon is their most important player in the bowling unit.

Nathan Lyon reached the milestone of 500 Test wickets while playing the first Test of the 3-match series against Pakistan. Lyon picked up his 500th wicket in the 2nd innings of the innings after the pacers had run through half of the Pakistan line-up.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that he (Lyon) is probably the most important cog in our bowling line-up,” Cummins said of the spinner after the Test match.

“This game is probably a little bit different. But most games where he’s bowling 30 overs a day, basically just put him down one end and he’s not going to go for many runs. He’s going to take a few wickets and then us quick bowlers can just rotate through the other end,” he further added.

Cummins has backed Nathan Lyon to play 5 more years and pick up 700 wickets. The fast bowler has backed Lyon to match legendary Shane Warne’s record of 708 wickets. The Pakistan Test was Lyon’s first since his injury during the Ashes series. Lyon had picked up a calf injury and had to fly out to Australia.

“No doubt he was missed over there in England (during this year’s Ashes series) for sure. As a captain, it makes it a lot easier knowing that bloke who has played 100-odd Test matches that knows his craft and can bowl pretty much in any conditions, you just let him get to work so it’s great having him back. Yeah, another 500 to go,” Cummins concluded.

The second Test match begins on 26 December.
