Imran Tahir, on Tuesday, became the fourth bowler in the history of T20 cricket to pick up 500 or more wickets. The 44-year-old bowler achieved the landmark while playing for Rangpur Riders in their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 match against Khulna Tigers at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
The other bowlers to have achieved the milestone are veteran pacer Dwayne Bravo, Afghanistan stalwart Rashid Khan and the wily Sunil Narine. Tahir, who will turn 45 in March, reached the 500-wicket mark in his 404th match.
Before the match against the Tigers, Tahir had 497 wickets to his name and he got to the landmark after dismissing the dangerous Alex Hales, who was batting on 60 with 7 fours and 3 sixes.

After dismissing Hales, Tahir did not stop and went on to pick up a 5-wicket haul. He got the wickets of Hales, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Afif Hossain Shrubo, Habibul Rahman and Akbar Ali to finish with impressive figures of 4-0-26-5.
Tahir joined the Riders only 2 days ago and made an impact for them right away. The Tigers’ batters tried to take the attack to Tahir after their team was asked to chase down a colossal target of 220. However, the former South African spinner did not let them get on top of him.
Tahir recently played for the Joburg Super Kings, who advanced to the Qualifier 2 of SA20 2024 before getting knocked out. In 11 matches, Tahir accounted for 9 wickets at an economy rate of 7.61.
In 38 T20Is for South Africa from 2013 to 2019, Tahir picked up 63 wickets with 2 four-wicket hauls and 2 five-wicket hauls. He didn’t get to don the national jersey after the 2019 World Cup where South Africa failed to reach the semis.
