Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricketer, turned 49 years old on Tuesday, December 19. The legendary cricketer scored over 27000 runs in international cricket with 71 hundreds and 146 half-centuries to show for his efforts.
Ponting also led Australia to World Cup wins in the 2003 and 2007 editions of the mega event. Ponting also scored a hundred in the final of the 2003 final against Sourav Ganguly’s India at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
On Tuesday, Delhi Capitals gave Ponting a pleasant surprise on his birthday before the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai. Ponting, who is the head coach of the Delhi-based franchise, cut a cake in the presence of Rishabh Pant and other members of the team.
The 26-year-old Pant, who is a part of the Capitals’ auction table for the first time, fed Ponting cake.
As far as DC are concerned, they released 11 players; Aman Khan, Chetan Sakariya, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Manish Pandey, Mustafizur Rahman, Phil Salt, Priyam Garg, Rilee Rossouw, Ripal Patel, Rovman Powell and Sarfaraz Khan before the auction.
They have nine slots left for the auction, including four overseas. The Delhi team has a salary cap of INR 28.95 crore.
The Capitals are yet to get their hands on the title with their best performance being ending as a finalist in the 2020 edition of the IPL. Last season, the Capitals finished ninth in the table with 10 points and a net run rate of -0.808 thanks to wins in five out of 14 matches in the tournament.
